Escambia County
Created in 1868 from parts of Baldwin and Conecuh counties, Escambia County took shape during Reconstruction. Atmore's story developed around a railroad stop known as Williams Station, followed by sawmills and the growth of a town. The Poarch Creek community represents a much longer history that continues in the present. Learning from the Tribe's museum and its own historical accounts adds an essential perspective alongside the county's later municipal, railroad and agricultural development across the Alabama coastal plain.
Brewton, East Brewton, Atmore and Flomaton make useful starting points for exploring different parts of the county. In the Atmore area, the Poarch Creek Indians Museum presents objects, artwork and historical records that connect visitors with the Tribe's story. Pair that stop with an interest in Atmore's railroad origins or begin with the county seat in Brewton. Select a community first, then use its official resources to build a manageable local itinerary.
